Kitchen of our new home

Since we've spent a lot of time thinking and selecting layouts, finishes, colors, etc. I thought I'd share what we've decided.  The kitchen of our new home was a focal point for me because I absolutely love to bake and cook, so I decided to share this room first.

I wanted something spacious that would allow me to watch the kids playing in the living room. Below are photos of the kitchen and I'll explain what each of them are throughout.
This is the layout of our new kitchen from another home under construction with the same floor plan as ours, except this house is "flipped."As shown below in the sketch, our cabinets will be all one level on the top. The white door is a large pantry as shown in the photo below.  These cabinets are Autumn Brown, the same color we selected for ours.
Below is a rendering of our actual kitchen, except our island will be all one level as shown in the picture above.  This is a very open concept with a large island to allow more baking/prep space. It'll be great when I need to spread out when I'm baking cakes. As you'll see in this rendering, we modified our upper cabinets so they are all taller (not staggered on top as they are in picture above). We also added a tall pantry cabinet to the right side of the counter, as you just can't have enough kitchen storage space.

The layout of our kitchen (minus the raised island) cabinets.
An example of the pantry (we'll have wood floors, not tile).  And I'm sure Dave will add more shelves
to maximize the space.
Adjacent to the kitchen is a large dining area with lots of natural light, as shown below in the model home.

Just off of the dining area is a door to the deck.  Most floor plans had a sliding door in this area, which limited the space for the dining table.  So the smaller door on the sidewall, instead of the back wall was a huge selling point for us.

The kitchen is in the back of the house and is accessed from a large open hallway that leads from the front door.

View of the hallway leading to the front door from the model house.  The doorway to the left is the entrance to the two kids bedrooms and bathroom.  The doorway to the right is the mud room/laundry room.  The half wall on the right is the stairs to the basement.  Our house will be flipped, we'll have a cool glass window in the door and we'll have spindles for the banister to the basement, instead of the half wall.
For our back splash, we wanted something simple, yet classy. We went with a lighter colored tile with a decorative row of accent tiles. This pictures shows the 6x6 tile we chose, however our accent row will be made from longer rectangles versus the small squares shown in the picture.

Similar back splash as we chose.
For our counter top, we wanted something a little lighter since our cabinets are darker. Our counter top will be "Kashmir White" granite.  I hope we like them because I went back and forth with these.

For our kitchen floor, we knew we wanted wood versus tile. Below is what we choose. Also shown is the color of carpet we choose. Hopefully we like it once it's in a larger format. Choosing from these mini pieces has been the hardest part about building a house.

Stay tuned for future posts with details on other rooms of our new home and more construction updates (framing is under way).
